The ladder monger sat on a stool before his wares: a courtyard lined with layers of bamboo ladders for sale. Amritsar, the Indian city that shares a border with Pakistan and home to the Golden Temple, is a city of industry on display. Carts of roasted peanuts, and piles of ginger; garages of machine parts and oiled mechanics; retail outlets packed with electronics with just enough room for the shopkeeper to tinker away.
