Nurse logs are named such because they provide much needed care and nourishment to young trees and other creatures. When a tree falls, the space it opens up in the canopy allows light-loving plants to establish. The crags of the bark provide a home for plants and animals that like to stay close to the ground. Saplings may sprout straight up from the log, taking up nutrients they needs as it decays.
